The Top 3 Dangers to Any Manager’s Job Security
Management roles have more impact on company success than workers. As a result, there is more pressure on you as a manager, more scrutiny of you and quicker action when things don’t go well. Your bosses have to act quickly to protect their own job security and the company’s success.
The higher you climb in management, the bigger your impact on company success, the bigger the expectations that are placed on you and the quicker you are removed if you don’t contribute enough to company success.
The greater the impact you have on the company, the higher the pressure to perform.
There are a lot of dangers to manager job security and career prospects. Some are fairly minor and it takes time before there is a real danger of losing your job. Other dangers can quickly escalate and result in you losing your job in months. I am not covering unethical behaviour, breaches of your employee code of conduct, lying, cheating etc that can get you fired very quickly.
The Dangers to Manager Job Security
The dangers I am covering occur when you are trying to do your job well as a manager or leader. Being aware of the dangers gives you a MUCH BETTER chance of avoiding these dangers. If you don’t avoid these dangers, the chance of losing your job goes up a lot AND getting promoted or earning a bonus or getting a pay rise – are all become very UNLIKELY.
To do well as a manager, you must increase the performance of the company overall. The minute you damage company performance overall, you are probably out of a job.
The top three dangers, in my experience, are:
- Managing a team with dropping team performance and results.
- Consistently making poor decisions or making more poor decisions than good ones
- Failing to manage your bosses well
I go into what to look out for and what to avoid for each of these top dangers.

The Biggest Danger For Any Manager – Managing A Team With Dropping Performance
Dropping team performance is probably the most serious danger to any manager or leader. The amount of value or profit you create through increasing the productivity of your team is hard to beat in any other way. When team performance drops, the negative impact on profit can easily reach hundreds of £’000s very quickly.
Just image how your boss would react when the profits the team creates drops by hundreds of £’000s or more. If you are not able to rectify the performance drop, even with your boss helping you, your boss often has little choice but to replace you, the manager.
After the lack of management skills or poor people skills of the manager, the MOST LIKELY cause of dropping team performance comes from your WORST TEAM MEMBER or PEOPLE PROBLEMS in the team.
People problems cause big distractions, emotional turmoil, and frustration and anger in other team members. I have seen hundreds of £’000s wiped off team profits from one month to the next because of people problems.

The Second Biggest Danger – Making Too Many Poor Decisions
Making decisions is probably the next biggest impact you make on business performance (The biggest impact is increasing team performance).
Making poor decisions on it own is not in itself a problem. I have made a ton of poor decisions and still got promoted most years.
The key is the impact of your decisions overall. The more they increase business performance on average, the better your rewards. The more your decisions damage business performance overall (or relative to your peers) the less secure your job, bonus, promotion prospects etc.

The Third Biggest Danger – Poor Upwards Management
The most important relationship you have is with your boss. Have a great relationship and you get a ton of personal rewards.
If you don’t have a good relationship, or you are not good at managing upwards, you will struggle to move your career forward, you will be more insecure in your role and you will be a lot less happy at work.

In Summary
The three biggest dangers to your jobs security as a manager are:
- Dropping team performance
- Making too many poor decisions
- Failing to manage upwards well
Your worst team member has a disproportionally large impact on team performance BECAUSE of the message they sent to the rest of the team about the standards and behaviour that are acceptable to you, the manager.
To improve team performance, improving the standards and performance of your worst team member is a must. They set the lowest acceptable standards within the team. Improve these standards put psychological pressure on the rest of the team to improve too. Improving your worst team member increases the performance of your team by much more than one person’s contribution as a result.
